Below is a more in-depth review that captures the essence of her guidance and the transformation I experienced under her mentorship. As a PhD holder in Materials Science and working as a scientist living for the past decade in Japan, I was searching for a mentor to help me regain control over my spoken English, especially after living in a non-English-speaking country for several years. My search led me to UrbanPro, where I explored various profiles and that’s when I came across Deboshree Roy (Debby). I initially attended four or five demo classes from other amazing teachers, but something about Debby’s approach stuck with me. Her teaching style was non-traditional and refreshing. Instead of focusing primarily on grammar or fundamentals, she zeroed in on my core issue spoken English and effective communication. She quickly identified my weak areas, such as hesitation, cluttered thoughts, and the tendency to over-explain while not being precise. Debby structured our sessions to tackle these issues directly. I believe her rich and diverse background made a big difference. One of her most powerful lessons was that communication isn’t just about speaking correctly in terms of grammar or content; but it’s equally or far more important about making your message clear, accurate, and understood by your audience. This was a game-changer for me. Debby’s classes were anything but conventional. Instead of sticking to a rigid syllabus, our lessons became an open forum where we discussed everything from current affairs to science, philosophy, and politics. Instead of teaching from a book, she engaged me in conversation, listening closely, picking out my mistakes, and helping me rectify them on the go. We spent two to three classes dedicated to perfecting the sound of each alphabet, using tongue twisters and exercises that significantly improved my pronunciation. This attention to detail in sounding out words gave me a newfound confidence in speaking. Debby is serious about her students’ progress. She isn’t the kind of teacher who just completes the class and moves on. She keeps track of your improvement and gives constructive, sometimes strict, feedback if necessary. I specifically asked her to push me, and she held me accountable if I wasn’t doing enough. Her feedback was always honest, leaving me with plenty of room for genuine improvement, as long as I was willing to embrace it. Her immense 14-year experience in the field of communication as a trainer, knowledge management manager, and communication coach, having contributed to the rise of Bengaluru as India’s Silicon Valley, adds to her credibility. She deeply understands the nuances of global communication and taught me how to adapt my speaking style for international audiences—a crucial skill for someone in my position. Though my professional commitments have taken precedence for now, I recognize that mastering a skill like effective communication is not a one-time achievement but a continuous journey. As a non-native English speaker, I understand that without regular practice, even well-honed abilities can diminish over time. Therefore, I fully intend to return to Debby's classes whenever time allows. Her guidance has been a compass on my path to becoming a more effective communicator, and I look forward to progressing further under her mentorship.
