I unable to speak English, and it is the main hurdle in my professional growth. My work depends on English communication. How can I improve? I want to talk with people in English so that I could improve my communication. I need your valuable guidance.
Greetings! Mr Jayprakash.
In a professional setting where English is required daily to communicate both verbally and in written form there a few helpful tips:
Good spoken English mostly depends on having a useful vocabulary, grammar, and appropriate context. So the first step is to have a good dictionary, a good grammar book ( would suggest Wren & Martin or High School Grammar), and a practice notebook.
Secondly, start reading English newspapers, stories or novels, non-fiction books or any other material. You will start noticing how each word is used in what context, how a sentence is formed, and how a conversation flows. Whenever you have doubts, revert to grammar exercises and dictionary. Record each word in a notebook. That way, you can increase vocabulary and sense the appropriate context and sentence forming, which will help in spoken English.
Thirdly watch English entertainment or news with subtitles on and after a few months again watch them with subtitles off. It will help you sense the way English is spoken and communicated as well as improve your auditory skills which in turn will help you understand another English speaker.
Fourthly, grab a friend, or do it yourself. You need to talk in English daily for at least 15 mins, whether you converse with a friend on simple topics or say simple things to yourself. It does not matter if it is wrong or correct. Just do it. If you want to record it, do so. Then go over the phrases you were hesitating or is mistaken by putting the sentence in a grammar-correcting app or by listening to other contexts. All it depends is on practice.
Best of luck!
read lessHello Jayprakash,
I hope you are doing well.
You can read some English Communication Books. I suggest you read "21 Days of Effective Communication". It is a fantastic book. Apart from that, you can Watch Movies with subtitles, Journal Daily.
I hope this will surely help you to better your communication skills.
Thank you!
Hi Jayprakash,
I have these suggestions to improve your vocabulary for spoken English,
- Watch simple recipes in English.
- Watch videos in English which teach your mother tongue.
- When you watch English web series, focus on the questions and answers in the content. Pause the questions and answers, make sure you can listen and understand these questions and answers. Now repeat these phrases until you get comfortable in pronunciation and can speak at a reasonable speed.
- To get better at effective communication, work on - Q & A, a decent vocabulary, knowledge of jargon, proper pronunciation, and speed. Use what you learn daily in your conversations- talk in English with friends, family, your pet dog, or street cat, just anyone would do.
Best of luck!
read lessA stepwise guide for getting hold of fluent spoken English
1. Start watching English movies and series on Netflix and Amazon Prime. Don't forget to turn on subtitles.
2. Try communicating in English as much as possible. When you will maximise your use of English in everyday life, you will start thinking in English.
3. A barrier in speaking fluent English for Indians is that they believe in Hindi and they translate it to English in their minds, this takes some time and hence causes stuttering and difficulty finding apt words
4. By constant usage of English, the ability to think in English will develop, and you will be good to go.
The SECRET is practice until you are perfect at it!
Hello Sir,
It looks like you are good with the grammar and only the communication part has problems. Here are a few methods which I recommend you should try to boost your spoken English.
1. Watch English Videos(Movies, Sport's, Netflix etc.) Of whichever field you are most interested in.
2. Start thinking in English. It may sound funny, but it is the most effective way. When you think of something, then try it in English.
3. Watch interviews and debates more and more.
Hi Jayprakash,
I think you're already doing great! You may require some more accuracy in the language which can be done gradually.
You can start with listening. I believe one learns more by listening than even speaking. And English is a subject which can be fun to learn. For example, watching movies/series/cartoons/Discovery/News, whatever is your interest, watch in English.
Start slowly. Take small steps. Begin with greetings, and go and interact with strangers! Maybe in the shops/malls/call customer care and speak in English. It gives a great boost in confidence.
Create an environment for yourself. Listen to music. Enjoy it.
Begin with short sentences while speaking to your colleagues or friends.
Even if you have made mistakes, don't stress about it. Just speak.
Good Luck!
