How IELTS is scored?

IELTS results are reported based on band scores ranging from 1 to 9. Band score 1 being the lowest and band score 9 is the highest. Over the past 30 years, IELTS band scores are recognized and accepted worldwide. Let’s check how each of the IELTS Band score means: Band score 9, Skill Level -- Expert Scoring a 9 band score means the test taker has complete operational command of the language. The usage of English language is appropriate, accurate and fluent and shows deeper understanding. Band score 8, Skill Level -- Very Good A band score of 8 signifies a test taker’s level of English language to be very good. The test taker has fully operational command of the English with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriate usage. They are capable of handling complex and detailed argumentation well. They sometimes may misunderstand some things in unfamiliar situations. How IELTS is scored? Band score 7, Skill Level -- Good Scoring a band score of 7 indicates a test taker has operational command over the language, with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings in some situations. They generally handle complex language well and understand detailed reasoning. Band score 6, Skill Level -- Competent IELTS band score of 6 means a test taker has an effective command over the English language with some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. They can understand fairly complex language in familiar situations. Band score 5, Skill Level -- Modest A band score of 5 means the candidate has a partial command over the English language and manages to cope with overall meaning in most of the situations, although they are likely to commit many mistakes. Band score 4, Skill Level -- Limited A test taker scoring 4 means his competence over the language is limited only to familiar situations. They are not able to use complex language, shows problems in understanding and expression. Band score 3, Skill Level -- Extremely Limited A band score of 3 means a candidate conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations. They may frequently breakdown in communication. Band score 2, Skill Level -- Intermittent A band score of 2 signifies the candidate has great difficulty understanding both spoken and written English. Band score 1, Skill Level -- Non Band score of 1 means the test taker has no ability to use the English language except few isolated words.
