What can be done when one forgets the Windows 2003 admin password?

Hi Sunitha, as other have pointed out if the system is in domain controller then you can easily reset the administrator password by accessing it from other system Assuming that you have left with no other choice i.e. you are not able to remember the password, System not in Domain , and there is no other administrator to you bail you out of this situation then this is what i have used it once. 1) Downloaded the Ubuntu ISO and booted that CD to that server and connected it to using a concole 2) Select the option "Try Ubuntu without changing any option" 3) Go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager 4) Then Settings>Repositories 5) Once the ‘Software Sources’ window appears, make sure you select ‘Software restricted by copyright or legal issues’, then click close 6) Click reload on synaptic package manager 7) Click Search, and type in ‘chntpw’ 8) Once the ‘chntpw’ app is found, right-click on it and ‘mark for installation’. 9) Click “Apply on Summary Window” and also to confirm changes. 10) An Internet Connection is a must for this method to work. 11) Next, we must mount the Windows drive. In Ubuntu, go to Places> Select the appropriate drive. 12) The final step of the process is actually resetting the password via the Linux terminal 13) In Ubuntu go to Applications>Accessories>Terminal. 14. Type ‘cd /media/disk/WINDOWS/system32/config/’ in the terminal window. 15. Type ‘sudo chntpw SAM’ 16. This by default will change the Administrator password. If you would prefer to change a particular user. Type ‘sudo chntpw -u username SAM’. 17. Afterwards, you’ll see a long display of information, most of which can be ignored. 18. The next step is to actually reset the windows password. It is recommended to make the password blank with an asterisk * . 19. You’ll then have to confirm the change with a Y, and reboot. Before performing these steps i strongly recommended you to connect your hard disk with another system, pull out your important data and then follow it. read less
