To understand this, we need to understand that western music is also a form of classical music to that respective part of the world, our classical music is called music of the east in the western part of the world, they dont call our music a classical music, they call their music as classical music, that is why we use the term western classical music , carnatic classical music & hindusthani classical so on and so forth. when one learns the science and maths behind any classical form can interpret the other classical forms of music, its just the labeling of names which differs, such as our 'SA' is their primary tonic note its called 'TONIC',for example in the key of C (C major or Cminor scale) C stands as tonic and so as in other keys. so if one is with total understanding of any form of music, its easy to learn the other, and that concludes , both western and carnatic classical music takes the same dedication and energy and understanding and interests to learn the art form, so it is for arabic or chinese music forms too. read less

There's a lot difference in both aspects. Western Classical or art music can be characterized by its tonal system and harmonic language, dodecaphonic tuning system, fixed notational system, standard musical forms, and instrumentation. When compared broadly to other traditions of music, Western Classical Music tends to place more emphasis on harmony and less on rhythm, and relies more on fixed performance rather than improvisation. read less

Indian classical music is both elaborate and expressive. Like Western classical music, it divides the octave into 12 semitones of which the 8 basic notes are, in ascending tonal order, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa for Hindustani music and Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa for Carnatic music, similar to Western music's Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do. However, Indian music uses just-intonation tuning, unlike most modern Western classical music, which uses the equal-temperament tuning system. Also, unlike modern Western classical music, Indian classical music places great emphasis on improvisation. read less
