What is the difference between carnatic and hindustani music?

Hindustani music is raga based music and carnatic is Kirti based music. If we see both the history carnatic is originated in the bakti movement and hindustani is originated during vedic period. And also we can say that carnatic is homogeneous and hindustani is heterogeneous. Usually hindustani music belongs from northern region and carnatic music is from souther region. Carnatic bit tough to learn as it is gamakas and kirti based music. 

There is no too much of different both are same  but the way of singing and gamakas are different.. Carnatic music hv so many ragas ,gamakas and different talas.. But hindustani music hv little bit of ragas and talas like mrng ragas etc that's it..listen one carnatic music bhairavi ata tala varna and listen hindustani kruthis so u can idenfies that's differences between carnatic music and hindustani music... Actually it's brilliant question u asking may be u satisfied my answer tq ashwini... 

To make it very easy Carnatic is South Indian music style and hindustani is North Indian style of music but they are very similar both use same s r g m p d n s and I think the main difference is in the ornamentation. In carnatic music we have thousands of ragas and 35 different talams are there on the other hand hindustani has good number of ragas and talas and there are many equivalent ragas you can find between these two styles if we go more deep analysing it goes on and on but if you ask me to put it in laymen's terms I would say carnatic music is complex and rich and technically brilliant and hindustani is little bit simple and more melodious with having all of those important technical elements I think this might be helpful for you
