The UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Civil Services Examination (CSE) consists of multiple stages, each with its own type of questions. Here's an overview of the types of questions asked in each stage of the UPSC exam:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims):

    • Objective Type Questions: The Prelims consists of two objective-type papers:
      • General Studies Paper I: This paper includes questions on subjects such as History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science and Technology, Environment, and Current Affairs.
      • General Studies Paper II (CSAT - Civil Services Aptitude Test): This paper tests candidates' comprehension, analytical ability, and decision-making skills.
  2. Main Examination (Mains):

    • Essay Writing: Candidates are required to write two essays, each carrying 125 marks. Essay topics cover a wide range of subjects, including current affairs, socio-economic issues, philosophical topics, etc.
    • Descriptive Type Questions: The Mains consists of nine papers, seven of which are compulsory and two are optional. The papers cover subjects such as History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science and Technology, Ethics, and Optional Subjects chosen by the candidates.
    • Answer Writing: Candidates are required to write descriptive answers, essays, and analysis on various topics within the given word limit.
  3. Personality Test (Interview):

    • Interview Questions: The Personality Test, commonly known as the interview, is conducted by the UPSC board to assess candidates' personality, suitability for a career in the civil services, mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, intellectual and moral integrity.

The questions asked in the UPSC exam are designed to test candidates' knowledge, understanding, analytical abilities, decision-making skills, communication skills, and overall suitability for a career in the civil services. The questions are framed to assess candidates' conceptual clarity, depth of understanding, and ability to apply their knowledge to real-world situations. It's important for aspirants to have a well-rounded preparation strategy that covers all aspects of the UPSC syllabus and includes practice in answering different types of questions effectively.
