A pronoun word that replaces a noun or noun phrase. There are several types of pronouns including relative pronouns, personal pronouns, and indefinite pronouns.

Read the sentences below to understand how nouns can be used in sentences. The word that is underlined is the pronoun.

1. I am a teacher.

2. We see with our eyes.

3. I can do anything that you can do.

4. He gave me a book.

5. Her bag was expensive.

6. Our class consists of twenty pupils.

7. They are going to Denmark.

8. Nobody showed up for practice today.

9. Each of the students raised their hands to answer the question.

10. You should respect your elders.

11. His socks were on the table.

12. They threw him a party.

13. That which is mine, belongs only to me.

14. Many of us have traveled very far to get here.

15. My car needs cleaning. T

Pronoun (Reflexive and Emphatic) A pronoun is a word which is used instead of a noun. Pronouns come in first person, second person, and third person.

First Person: I, we, me, mine, us, our, ours Second Person: you, your, yours Third Person: he, she, it, them, they, him, her, his, their, theirs, hers, its

Compound Personal Pronoun

When ‘self’ is added to my, your, him, her, it, and when ‘selves’ is added to our, your, them, we, get compound personal pronouns.

E.g. myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves. Reflexive Pronoun Reflexive pronouns are those when the action done by the subject turns back (reflects) upon the subject.

1. I burnt myself.

2. We burnt ourselves.

3. You will burn yourself.

4. You will burn yourselves.

5. The dog burnt itself.

6. They burnt themselves

Emphatic Pronoun When compound personal pronouns are used for the sake of emphasis they are called emphatic pronouns.

1. I will do it myself.

2. I myself saw him do it.

3. We will see to it ourselves.

4. You yourself can best explain.

5. He himself said so.

6. She herself said so.

7. I was told by the teacher himself.

8. We saw the king himself.

9. The town itself is not very large.

10. They themselves admitted their guilt.
