Objectives of the Lesson:
- Guidance for a Spoken-English-beginner to attain fluency in English
- Explain a step-by-step process for learning to speak English
For a non-native speaker to speak in English, the following steps are recommended:
Step-1. Understand and learn the sentence structure of English:
The English language has a different way of framing sentences from our Indian languages, in the sense the order of sentence parts is different from our Indian languages.
E.G. My brother bought a cell phone yesterday. (Subject+Verb+Object+Adverbial).
If the above sentence were to be said in Telugu or Hindi, the order of the sentence parts would be different and would look something like this:
Yesterday my brother cell phone bought ( Adverbial+Subject+Object+Verb). The order of the sentence parts is absolutely wrong when it comes to English.
So, a beginner who wants to speak in English should understand the order of sentence parts in English.
Step-2: Learn sufficient number of Verb Structures to be able to speak in English
To express one's thoughts and ideas in English, one must learn enough verb structures in English. One must learn the following structures to be able to speak in English:
- Present Tense Verb Structures
- Past Tense Verb Structures
- Future Tense Verb Structures
- Modal Verb Structures
Step-3: Learn how to use Conjunctions/Connective words to get fluency in connected speech
In connected speech, one needs to use certain connective words called 'conjunctions' to make one's thoughts sound connected and logical.
e.g. We can say: 'I was late. I missed the bus', in which case, it becomes difficult for the listener to make out the connection between the two sentences. But, if you say the same sentences in the following way, it becomes meaningful and logical:
'I was late because I missed the bus.'
Thus, if a person wants to learn to speak English, he/she must follow these steps. An expert trainer can always guide such a person to speak in Engish fluently.
Happy Learning!
