What is an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)?

An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a legally mandated and individualized plan designed to meet the unique educational needs of a student with a disability. The IEP is developed collaboratively by a team that typically includes the student's parents or guardians, teachers, special education professionals, and other relevant school personnel. 1. Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP):

   • This section provides a detailed assessment of the student's current academic and functional abilities. It includes information on the student's strengths, weaknesses, and how the disability affects their involvement and progress in the general education curriculum.

2. Measurable Annual Goals:

   • The IEP sets measurable and specific academic and functional goals that the student is expected to achieve within a specified time frame (usually one year). These goals are aligned with the student's present levels of performance.

3. Special Education Services and Supports:

   • The IEP outlines the specialized services and supports the student will receive to help them achieve their goals. This may include services provided within or outside the general education classroom, such as resource room instruction, speech therapy, occupational therapy, or counseling.

4. Accommodations and Modifications:

   • Accommodations and modifications are adjustments made to the learning environment to ensure that the student can access and participate in the curriculum. Accommodations do not change the content or expectations, while modifications may involve adjustments to the curriculum or assessment.

5. Participation in General Education:

   • The IEP addresses the extent to which the student will participate in general education classes and activities. Inclusion in mainstream classrooms is emphasized whenever possible, and the IEP team determines the appropriate level of support.

6. Transition Planning:

   • For students approaching the transition to post-secondary education, employment, or independent living, the IEP includes a transition plan. This plan outlines specific goals, services, and activities to prepare the student for life after high school.

7. Assessment and Reporting:

   • The IEP specifies how the student's progress will be assessed and reported to parents or guardians. It may include information about alternative assessments or modifications to standard assessments.

8. Annual Review and Revision:

   • The IEP is reviewed at least annually, and adjustments are made as needed based on the student's progress and changing needs. Parents, teachers, and other relevant team members participate in the review process.
