Preparing Online? Are you learning enough?
Civil Service is thought to be as the most responsible and coveted career option in India due to the wide spectrum of opportunities it provides for connecting with the common mass and working for them by taking small yet vital steps that encourage the society to forge ahead. Civil Service aspirants find it difficult to identify the best coaching centre in Kolkata and in most of the cases resort to online videos. There are many online videos that are freely available; and surely those are informative and knowledge imparting. But, the Civil Service Examination seeks to test the basic understanding and conceptual clarity. The mantra is to have restricted knowledge but non-exhaustive understanding.
For example, newspaper reading is crucial for preparing for the examination. But, at the same time, it is not at all required to be aware of each and every article of the newspaper. On the contrary, five important topics from the newspaper, which have mention in the syllabus, should be picked up and a complete mind-map of their origin, recent status, economic, social, environmental and political aspects should be studied and you are done with your newspaper notes.
The reasons for which classroom programmes are important for UPSC preparation are:
- A competitive preparatory environment is necessary if you are preparing for a competitive examination
- Classroom modules give opportunity for in-depth clarification of doubts of each and every aspirant
- The mentors can address the universal questions as well as student-specific doubts related to a topic
- Compulsory and regular test modules bring consistency in preparation
- Exposure to an integrated and exhaustive preparation strategy focusing on conceptual clarity and remembering of facts and figures
Going to Delhi is not mandatory for cracking the Civil Services
It is difficult to find a good coaching centre for UPSC preparation in Kolkata mostly due to the lack of awareness among the students. It is also very disappointing to learn that students from Kolkata, at times decide to give up on their goal of their dream job of becoming and IAS or IPS officer as they are unknown of the right guidance and mentorship programme in the city and are in some or the other way could not invest in going to Delhi, which is considered as the ‘only study point for Civil Services’ on India. The need for awareness of Civil Services guidance programme in Kolkata has become all the more important in the recent times as many dedicated and determined students from the state have broken the myth that “Kolkata cannot produce Civil Servants, due to the lackluster conviction of the students”.
