The First and Second world wars affected the forest in Indian and Java in the following manner:

  1. In Java, the Dutch followed the policy of destroying sawmills and burning teak logs so that it would not fall into Japanese hands.
  2. Deforestation for getting raw material like wooden blocks for railway tracks, warships, wood for making guns, bamboo for tents, etc.
  3. Deforestation for making routes through dense forests of Indian and Java.
  4. Forests were cleared for setting camps for soldiers.
  5. Threats caused to wildlife due to shelling, bombing, etc.
  6. Local communities, forest dwellers, tribes were also displaced due to wars. While at the same time many local communities used war as an opportunity to expand their cultivation by clearing forests.
