It is sad to see electronically synthesized instrument tones is replacing use of acoustic instruments. The Sitar,in our opinion, is an excellent string instrument that renders unique tone and timbre. From its origin in Iran, it came to India with the Mughals and made its place at the heart of Indian classical music. Playing Sitar is about discipline, focus and perseverance. Music composers and arrangers from Indian cinema industry have used Sitar in very creative ways to further its presence in the non-classical genre of Indian music. Progressive rock groups like Traffic and Kulashaker used Sitar in their compositions to add certain characteristic to their music. Most of you would be knowing the story of George Harrison from The Beatles and his association with Late Pt. Ravi Shankar was triggered by Harrison's interest in the Sitar. Artists like Anoushka Shankar are doing great work in promoting Sitar music in the world arena. read less
