Songs do help a bit, but I prefer vocal exercises and vocal piece practices to improve singing, and if the songs have complicated vocal pieces, they are vocal exercise.

Yes, you can start. Its good to start at 7 if they are intrested, and yes obviously they can easily grasp. The only thing is required that they should have a singing voice. Many artists started at the age of 6 too.
