The more number of words you know in a language shows how strong you are in that particular language. So, the best way to improve your vocabulary is to set a goal to yourself on every single day. You can learn 1 new word or 10 new words daily. The number of words you learn every day depends upon your learning capacity and interest. You can set your limit. The following are the best ways to improve your vocabulary on a gradual basis:
1. Developing daily reading habit: You can read a newspaper or magazine (2-5 pages) or read some 5 to 10 pages from a book/novel (daily)
2. Curiosity to learn new words: Note down new words that you come across and refer to the standard English dictionaries (i.e., Oxford)
Note down the meanings and its other uses in the language
Try to use those words in your daily speaking & writing wherever it is needed
3. Learn the roots of the word: This technique will help you to know the exact origin of a particular word. This method will also enhance your learning about the word and will help you to get introduced to many new terms from the same root word. For example, the words: 'spectator', 'spectrum', 'spectacle', 'Inspector' was formed from the same root word 'spectre' which means 'to look/watch'. In the English language, we have 250 words formed from the same root word 'spectre'. So, by knowing the root word, we can learn so many new words as possible. Then you will be rich in your vocabulary.
These ways can fantastically help you to improve your vocabulary in a language.
