The piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori, an Italian instrument maker, around the year 1700. Cristofori is credited with creating the first practical piano, which he called the "gravicembalo col piano e forte" (harpsichord with soft and loud), due to its ability to produce sounds at different volumes depending on the force with which the keys were struck. This invention marked a significant departure from earlier keyboard instruments like the harpsichord and clavichord.
