Grammar is the proper order of words in any language. Phonics has to do with the sound of letter combinations. Examples (grammar): “They were waiting for the sun to set in a big red car.” WRONG GRAMMMAR! It sounds as if the sun is setting in their red car.

Grammar and phonics are two different aspects of language learning: Phonics focuses on the relationship between sounds and their corresponding letters or groups of letters. It teaches reading and pronunciation skills by helping learners understand how letters combine to form sounds and words. Grammar involves the rules and structure of a language, including how words are formed (morphology), how words are combined into sentences (syntax), and how meaning is conveyed (semantics). It covers parts of speech, sentence structure, verb conjugation, and more. In summary, phonics is about the sounds and decoding of words, while grammar is about the rules and structure of language usage. read less

Why isn't phonics spelled like it sounds?
Basically: because words are labels for concepts and are mostly arbitrary, with the exception of some onomatopoeia. It's usually pointless to infer anything about the quality of a thing from the quality of the name for it.
