Bengal being the capital of British dominion of India, it had utmost importance strategically. Erstwhile Bengal was a large province with an equivalent population portion consisting of Hindus and Muslims. Earlier Lord Curzon proposed the division with the motive of administrative requirements but eventually it percolated as a plan to "DIVIDE AND RULE". The Britishers well understood that the spark of freedom struggle was imminent shortly in this economically and strategically important region. To keep things under their control and prevent or suppress any such movement, they triggered the weakest of our emotions that are religious sentiments, Hindus were agitated against Muslims and vice versa. They fought amongst themselves, which nullified their united efforts to strengthen the freedom struggle in Bengal. Later the partition resulted in the formation of east and west Bengal, the former being the forte of Muslims and the later Hindus.
The conclusion could be that the partition of Bengal and that of India was based on the intelligent political and vested interests of the Britishers, east India company to prolong their reign over the region.
