Nature and technique Mural painting is inherently different from all other forms of pictorial art in that it is organically connected with architecture. The use of colour, design, and thematic treatment can radically alter the sensation of spatial proportions of the building.

'Realistic painting' describes a style or GENRE of fine art painting, whereas 'mural painting' describes a LOCATION specific to the painting, i.e. 'mural' appertains to being painted actually ON A WALL, similarly to 'floor painting', or 'ceiling painting'

When you're building a mural art, it's best to use acrylic paints as they work on almost all surfaces like floors, and walls. They are famous for their quick-drying and flexibility, which are desirable traits for creating wall art.

In 16th-century Europe, oil painting on canvas arose as an easier method for mural painting. The advantage was that the artwork could be completed in the artist's studio and later transported to its destination and there attached to the wall or ceiling.

Icons, such as the Virgin (Theotokos) and Child between Saints Theodore and George, served as tools for the faithful to access the spiritual world—they served as spiritual gateways. Similarly, mosaics, such as those within the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna, sought to evoke the heavenly realm.
