Hi if you are a beginner and just starting it out with an instructor, in my experience i have seen that starting out with practise pad for a 2-3 months is necessary as it will help you develop techniques and what the material the teacher is providing, you have to get comfortable with your strokes in first few lessons to play the drums, so that you do not develop certain drum habits.
