Purpose:

NEET UG is the qualifying entrance exam for admission to the following undergraduate medical programs in India:

  • MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)
  • BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)
  • BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery)
  • BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
  • BVSc & AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry)
  • B.Sc Nursing and other allied medical programs

Conducting Body:

  • National Testing Agency (NTA): NTA is responsible for organizing the NEET UG exam, releasing the syllabus, conducting the examination, and declaring the results.

Eligibility:

  • Age Limit: Candidates must be at least 17 years old as of December 31 of the year of admission. The upper age limit is 25 years for general category candidates and 30 years for reserved categories (OBC, SC, ST, and PwD).
  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have completed or be appearing in their 10+2 (or equivalent) examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects. They must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in PCB for the general category (40% for OBC/SC/ST and 45% for General-PwD).

Exam Pattern:

  • Mode: Pen-and-paper-based (Offline).
  • Duration: 3 hours and 20 minutes.
  • Total Marks: 720.
  • Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany & Zoology).
  • Question Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).
  • Marking Scheme: +4 for each correct answer, -1 for each incorrect answer, and 0 for unanswered questions.

Syllabus:

The syllabus for NEET UG is based on the NCERT curriculum for classes 11 and 12. It includes:

  • Physics: Topics like Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrodynamics, Optics, Modern Physics, etc.
  • Chemistry: Physical, Organic, and Inorganic Chemistry.
  • Biology: Cell Biology, Genetics, Ecology, Human Physiology, Plant Physiology, Biotechnology, etc.

Significance:

  • Uniformity: NEET UG replaced various state-level and institution-specific medical entrance exams, creating a single, uniform entrance test across India.
  • Admission Process: The scores obtained in NEET UG are used by central and state government medical institutions, private colleges, and deemed universities for admission to their medical and dental courses.
  • Reservation: NEET UG follows the reservation policies of the Indian government, providing reservations for different categories such as SC, ST, OBC, and PwD.
