NCERT Class 9 Maths Chapter 5 starts with the introduction of geometry. Geometry
appears to have originated from the need for measuring land. This chapter highlights
the contribution of the Greek mathematician – Euclid. He collected and summarised his
entire work, especially his thesis called ‘Elements’ in Alexandria, Ptolemaic Egypt. His

Section 5.2 – The Greek mathematician ‘Euclid’ studied Geometry by observing abstract
objects around him and derived terms such as point, line, plane or a surface, solid
shapes and their sizes, position, space, etc. He also studied the dimensions of these
geometrical objects and noted down his conclusions in the form of definitions, axioms
and five postulates. In this section, you’ll learn ‘Euclid’s five postulates’ and further
