“Packing” is an extract from Jerome K. Jerome’s novel, ‘Three Men in a Boat’. This is a humorous piece dealing with the utter confusion and mess created by the people who are inexperienced in packing luggage.
Summary:
The author and his friends decide to go on a trip. The first most important task they had to perform was packing their luggage. Considering the task of packing to be unnecessarily menial, Jerome proclaims to be an expert in packing. His intention in saying so was that he expected to supervise George and Harris while they did all the physical labour. But the situation turned out to be very, unlike what he had expected. To Jerome’s utter irritation, George and Harris relaxed on chairs while he ended up doing all the packing.
When the packing had been done, Harris pointed out that he is shoes had not been packed, and so the bag was opened again. Immediately after, the bag is opened once more as the author was unsure as to he had packed his toothbrush or not. After locating the toothbrush inside a boot, the bag is closed for the third time. The next query comes from George about the soap, but Jerome simply ignores him and straps the bag up. But the bag has to be opened yet again because the author had packed his spectacles inside. So it was ultimately past ten that Jerome was done with packing.
Exasperated at their friend’s inefficiency, George and Harris decide to teach Jerome a thing or two about packing by packing the hampers themselves. They, however, managed to break a cup at the very start, followed by squashing a tomato, stepping on butter and smashing pies by putting heavy luggage on them. This is followed by an episode solely revolving around the butter. Harris noticed butter sticking to the sole of George’s slipper. He scraped it off and put it on a chair, the chair on which Harris sits down, causing the butter to stick to his pants. After a brief search for the butter all over the room, George discovered it at the back of Harris’ pants and packed it in a teapot.
Their pet dog Montmorency plays his part in the chaos by sitting on luggage, spoiling jam and smashing lemons by mistaking them for rats. The packing is finally done at 12.50 in the night and tremendously tired because of the packing, the friends go off to sleep as they had to wake up at 6.30 the next morning.
