Section 15.1 – In this section, you will learn about lightning. This section deals with the concept of lightning and how this natural phenomenon is caused. You will learn that in ancient times, people used to be scared of lightning and thought it to be the wrath of Lords. They did not know the reason and hence assumed it as a punishment sent by Lords. You will learn that now we all know that lightning is caused by the accumulation of charges in the clouds. You will also learn about the sparks that the Greeks knew and learn a little on the story of the discovery of sparks seen on clothes.

Section 15.2 –  This section deals with Charging by Rubbing. In this section, you will learn about the charge created when brushing a comb on dry hair, a plastic refill is rubbed with polythene. Such objects are called charged objects. This section has activities to understand the concept of charge by rubbing the objects.

Section 15.3 – This section deals with types of charges and their interaction. In this section, you will learn about the different types of charges and the reaction of charges on interaction. You will learn that few charges repel each other and few charges attract. You will also learn about the positive and negative charges, electric current and motion of charges.

Section 15.4 – This section deals with Transfer of Charge. In this section, you will learn about the charges being carried and electroscope which is a device used to test whether an object is carrying a charge or not. You will learn that electrical charge can be transferred from a charged object to another through a metal conductor. You will also learn about concepts like discharge and earthing.

You will also study the do’s and don’ts to be observed during lightning when you are inside the home or outside- to avoid going near any electric poles, keeping the electrical appliances unplugged. You will even learn many safety measures that need to be followed during lightning to avoid any harm.

Section 15.7 – This section deals with earthquakes. In this section, you will learn about the minor and major earthquakes. You will study how these earthquakes are caused, the reason and also about the damage an earthquake can cause to life and property. You will also learn that earthquakes can further cause floods, landslides and tsunamis. Besides, you will learn that these tremors are caused by the disturbance deep down inside the uppermost layer of the earth is called the crust. This section also covers detailed information on measuring the intensity of an earthquake on a scale called the Richter scale. You will also learn the safety measures to be followed during an earthquake, and understand how to keep yourself safe during an earthquake.
