The NCERT Class 8 Science, Chapter 10 deals with Reaching The Age of Adolescence. In this chapter, you will learn more about the changes in the body after reaching a certain age of adolescence. Section 10.1 – This section deals with adolescence and puberty. In this section, you will learn about the natural process of growing up and the age when the body undergoes changes leading to reproductive maturity is called adolescence. You will understand that the period of adolescence comes along with many changes in the body. You will also learn about puberty and its related concepts; and will understand that the stage of poverty ends when an adolescent reaches reproductive maturity.
Section 10.2 – This section deals with changes at puberty. In this section, you will learn about the different changes that take place in the human body during the phase of puberty. In this section, you will learn about the increase in height, change in body shape and voice change in humans. You will also learn about the increased activity of sweat and sebaceous glands and also the emotional, mental and intellectual maturity when one reaches the age of puberty.
Section 10.3 – This section deals with secondary sexual characters. In this section, you will learn about the other sexual characters that help to distinguish between a male and a female like facial hair, moustache and beard. These are all the secondary sexual characters apart from the reproductive organs in male and female. You will also learn about male and female hormones secreted from an endocrine gland called the pituitary gland.
Section 10.4 – This section deals with the role of hormones in initiating a reproductive function. In this section, you will learn more about the function of hormones that help in the reproductive system. You will learn more about the secretion of sex hormones and the role played by these hormones in the reproduction process.
NCERT Class 8 Science, Chapter 10 helps you to understand the concept of Reaching the Age of Adolescence. In this chapter, you will learn more about the reproductive system. This chapter deals with the sensitive phase of life where there are many changes in the body. These changes mark the onset of puberty. You will learn about the secondary sexual characters like beard, moustache and facial hair, which help to distinguish between a male and a female. You will also learn about the sudden increase in height, changes in body shape and change of voice. These are the changes you will observe in an adolescent. This chapter focuses on all the concepts of adolescence and puberty.
Section 10.5 – This section deals with the reproductive phase of life in humans. In this section, you will learn that the reproductive phase of life begins at puberty and generally lasts till the age of 45 to 50. You will also learn about the process of releasing an egg in a female and its maturity. If the egg fertilises, it will result in pregnancy and if there is no fertilisation, the egg along with the wall of uterus sheds. You will learn more about the process of menstruation, and menopause which occurs anytime between 45 to 50 years.
Section 10.6 – This section deals with the determination of sex of the baby. In this section, you will learn about thread-like structures called chromosomes in the fertilised egg. You will learn more about the pair of chromosomes called X and Y. A female has two X chromosomes and a male has one X and one Y chromosome. The sex of the baby depends on the chromosomes that fertilise the egg.
Section 10.7 – This section deals with hormones other than sex hormones. In this section, you will learn about other hormones secreted in the body which have specific functions to perform. You will learn about hormone thyroxine, insulin, adrenalin and other growth hormones in the body. This section helps you to understand the role of each hormone in the body.
Section 10.8 – This section deals with the role of hormones in completing the life history of insects and frogs. In this section, you will learn about the change from larva to adult is called metamorphosis and this in insects is controlled by insect hormones. You will understand the different insect hormones which help in the growth of these insects.
Section 10.9 – This section deals with reproductive health. In this section, you will learn about the balanced diet required for correct growth in adolescents. You will learn about the nutrition required for the human body and avoid all the packed and processed foods. You will also learn about personal hygiene to be maintained by taking bath regularly and special care to be taken during menstruation to avoid any infections. You will also learn about the importance of physical exercise to maintain a good and healthy body. You will also learn about the significance of saying no to drugs.
