The NCERT Class 8 Science, Chapter 12 deals with Friction. In this chapter, you will learn more about the concept of friction. You will learn about the factors affecting friction, which helps you to understand the cause of friction; the importance of friction and the other related benefits of friction. This chapter gives a clear understanding of the concept of friction and the significance of friction. You will also learn about friction in liquids and its importance. This chapter has various practical examples which help you to understand the concept better. You will also learn how wheels reduce the friction and practical aspects of friction between the road and wheels.
To know more about NCERT Solutions for Class 8, Science Chapter 12, Friction, let’s look at the topics and sub-topics of this chapter:
12.1 Force of Friction
12.2 Factors affecting Friction
12.3 Friction: A Necessary Evil
12.4 Increasing and Reducing Friction
12.5 Wheels Reduce Friction
12.6 Fluid Friction
Section 12.1 – This section deals with the force of friction. In this section, you will learn about the force of friction between the surfaces where force is applied. You will learn that the force of friction always opposes the applied force. This section has simple activities to illustrate the concept of friction.
Section 12.2 – In this section, you will learn about the different factors affecting friction. You will learn about spring balance and irregularities on the surface of two objects is the main cause of friction. The irregularities of the two surfaces lock into each other. You will learn that the irregularities increase when the objects are pressed harder against each other. Besides, you’ll also study about static friction and sliding friction.
Section 12.3 – In this section, you will learn about the significance of friction observed in daily life. You will see practical examples like friction between chalk and board causes the chalk to write on the board, the friction between pen and paper. Without friction, an object which starts moving would never come to a halt. You will learn both aspects of friction. There are both advantages and disadvantages of friction.
NCERT Class 8 Science, Chapter 12 helps you to understand the concept of Friction. In this chapter, you will learn about friction and the factors affecting friction. You will also learn about the significance of friction and the role played by friction in day to day life. This chapter has various practical examples collected from daily instances, which help you to understand the applicability of the concept. You will also learn the concept of fluid friction. This chapter helps you to understand the role played by friction and how this friction is created between two objects.
Section 12.4 – This section deals with increasing and reducing friction. In this section, you will learn the measures taken to minimise and increase friction according to the requirement. You will understand the reason behind the grooves on the shoe sole, treaded tyres – to reduce friction. The reason behind sprinkling the fine powder on the carrom board while playing, i.e. to reduce friction and ensure smooth movement, will also be explained to you in detail. You will also learn about using oil, lubricants in machines to ease the flow and reduce friction.
Section 12.5 – This section deals with the concept wheel to reduce friction. In this section, you will learn the reason for the wheels being attached to trolley bags and luggage carriers. You will learn the concept of rolling friction and sliding friction.
Section 12.6 – This section deals with Fluid Friction. In this section, you will learn about water and other liquids exerting a force of friction when objects move through them. You will learn more about the friction of both gases and liquids.; and the fact that the frictional force exerted by fluids is called drag. You will understand the techniques used to reduce friction by giving a certain shape to the objects.
