Section 6.1 – This section deals with the concept of Combustion. In this section, you will learn about the process of combustion. It is a chemical process in which a substance reacts with oxygen to give out heat. In this section, you will learn more about this chemical reaction. You will learn about the chemical reaction called combustion, with many practical experiments. In this section, there are many practical examples which help you to understand the concept better. You will learn what fuel combustible is and will also learn the practical aspects of burning a match stick. Besides, you will also study ignition temperature. There are many simple activities in this section which make the concept easier and clearer. You will also learn about substances which ignite very fast and are called inflammable substances.
Section 6.2 – This section deals with the concept of controlling fire. In this section, you will learn more about the process of controlling fire. You will learn about the experiences of fire breaking out in one’s neighbourhood and the measures taken to control that fire. In this section, you will learn about the fire extinguishers kept in buildings to control fire during an emergency, fire brigades that are called when there is a fire breakout in any locality or building, and the measures taken by them to put off that fire. You will learn about how water is used to put off the fire and control the temperature to stop the fire from spreading.
NCERT Class 8 Science, Chapter 6 helps you to understand the concept of Combustion and Flame. In this chapter, you will learn about combustion and flame with the help of many activities and practical examples. This chapter helps you to clearly understand the concept of combustion, inflammable substances, fuel and measures to control fire. In this chapter, you will learn more about the flame and its structure. This chapter has many practical activities that help you to learn using practical examples making the learning more effective. The examples are all related to daily life and hence make it easy for one to connect the theory to practical concepts.
Section 6.3 – In this section, you will learn about the types of combustion based on the time taken for the combustion process. In this section, you will learn about rapid combustion and spontaneous combustion. You will learn to differentiate between the types of combustion depending on the time taken for the reaction. Each substance reacts to oxygen in a different way and takes its own time to produce heat. This combustion process differs from substance to substance. You will also learn about the explosion and how the explosion happens under pressure.
Section 6.4 – This section deals with the concept of flame. In this section, you will learn about flame and its properties. There are different types of flames on the basis of structure, colour and size. In this section, you will learn with the help of activities to observe flames while burning a stove and candles. This section is a brief introduction of the concept of flame.
Section 6.5 – This section deals with the structure of a flame. In this section, you will learn about the different zones of a candle flame. You will learn more about the substances which vapourise during burning, gives flame. You will also learn about the different types of flames based on the substance being vaporized. In this section, you have many activities which help you to learn more about the structure of a flame while performing these activities.
Section 6.6 – This section deals with the concept of fuel. In this section, you will learn that substances such as wood, charcoal, petrol and kerosene are called fuel. They are used to produce heat energy for domestic and industrial purposes. In this section, you will learn about the characteristics of an ideal fuel.
Section 6.7 – This section deals with the concept of fuel efficiency. In this section, you will learn about the characteristics of an efficient fuel. There are many factors to consider when choosing the type of fuel used. These factors determine the fuel efficiency. In this section, you will also learn about the calorific value and the unit to express calorific value. You will also learn about the harmful effects of fuel on the environment.
