Ever since your childhood, you have been hearing from your elders that you must never touch electrical appliances with wet hands. Isn’t it? But have you ever thought about the reason behind this? Do you know why it is dangerous to touch an electrical appliance with wet hands? Chemical Effects of Electric Current Class 8 NCERT, Chapter 14 gives answers to all such questions. In previous classes, you have learnt that the materials, which allow an electric current to pass through them, are good conductors of electricity. On the other contrary, materials, which do not allow an electric current to pass through them easily, are poor conductors of electricity. Metals such as copper and aluminium conduct electricity whereas materials such as rubber, plastic and wood do not.
To know more about Chemical Effects of Electric Current Class 8 NCERT Solutions, Science Chapter 14, let’s look at the topics and sub-topics of this chapter :
14.1 Do Liquids Conduct Electricity?
14.2 Chemical Effects of Electric Current
14.3 Electroplating
Section 14.1 – In this section, you will study whether liquids conduct electricity or not. And if yes, then how? With the use of a tester, you will learn how to determine this fact. Before using the tester we should check whether it is working or not. When the liquid between the two ends of the tester allows the electric current to pass, the circuit of the tester becomes complete. Most liquids that conduct electricity are solutions of acids, bases and salts. We can also use the magnetic effect of an electric current to make another kind of tester. When current flows in a wire and we kept a compass needle nearby, even if the current is small, the deflection of the magnetic needle can be seen. This ensures that liquids do conduct electricity.
Section 14.2 – This section will teach you the chemical effects of electric current. In class VII you have studied the chemical effects of electric current. The process of decomposition of a chemical compound in a solution when an electric current passes through it is called electrolysis. This process is due to the chemical effect of electric current. Passage of an electric current through a conducting solution causes chemical reactions is an example of chemical effect of electric current.
Section 14.3 – This section deals with the concept of electroplating. It is basically the process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another material by means of electricity. The object to be electroplated is made the cathode by connecting it to the negative terminal of the battery. The metal which has to be deposited is made the anode by connecting it to the positive terminal of the battery. Electroplating can be used to prevent rusting, to give a bright attractive appearance, for silver plating. It can also be used for storing food without getting spoilt.
