The NCERT Class 8 Science, Chapter 8 deals with Cell: Structure and Functions. In this chapter, you will learn about the discovery of the cell and its structure. Section 8.1 – This section deals with the discovery of the cell. In this section, you will study about Robert Hooke who observed slices of cork under a simple magnifying device. You will also learn about how he took thin slices of cork and observed them under a microscope. He observed that boxes that appeared like a honeycomb and coined the term ‘cell’ for each box. In this section, you will also learn that the cells of living organisms could only be observed after the discovery of improved microscopes. You will also learn that detailed observation was possible only with the help of latest microscopes having high magnification.
Section 8.2 – This section deals with the concept of Cell. In this section, you will learn about basic structural units in all living organisms called cells. You will learn that cells in the living organisms are complex and very different from the bricks used for buildings. This section is a brief introduction to the topic cells.
Section 8.3 – In this section, you will learn that different living organisms have a difference in their cells on the basis of number, size and shape. You will learn about the living organisms made of more than one cell called multicellular organisms and the organisms with a single cell called unicellular organisms. You will learn more about the shape of cells and about amoeba which has no definite shape, White Blood Cells in human beings can change its shape from time to time. You will also learn about the variations found in the sizes of cells. It can be as small as a millionth of a metre or maybe large as a few centimetres.
Section 8.4 – This section deals with cell structure and function. In this section, you will learn about the functions of organs in a body like absorption, digestion and assimilation. You will also learn about issues which are groups of similar cells performing a specific function.

In this chapter, you will learn more about the small components of living organisms called cells. You will also learn about the different types of cells found in different organisms and understand the variety of cells in terms of size, shape and number. Section 8.5 – This section deals with parts of the cell. In this section, you will learn more about the structure of the cell. You will learn about the different parts of the cell-like cell membrane, cytoplasm, cell wall, nucleus and cytoplasm. You will also learn about nuclear membrane, genes, chromosomes and protoplasm. This section helps you to understand all the parts of the cell and its function.
Section 8.6 – This section deals with the comparison plant and animal cells. In this section, you will understand the difference in the cells of a plant and cells of an animal. You will also learn that plant cell has a big central vacuole and in animals, there are a number of small vacuoles.
