In this chapter, you’ll study ‘mensuration’. It is the study of various 2D and 3D geometrical shapes and figures with respect to their length, perimeter, area, surface area and volume. The word ‘mensuration’ means ‘measurement’. You will make use of algebraic equations and geometric calculations to measure various aspects of shapes.
In-Depth knowledge of mensuration is very useful in practical life as mensuration is used to measure -the volume of water levels in rivers, surface areas for painting houses, area of the agricultural field, volume of milk packets and more.
11.1 Introduction
11.2 Let us Recall
11.3 Area of Trapezium
11.4 Area of a General Quadrilateral
11.5 Area of a Polygon
11.6 Solid Shapes
11.7 Surface Area of Cube, Cuboid and Cylinder
11.8 Volume of Cube, Cuboid and Cylinder
11.9 Volume and Capacity
Section 10.2 – In this section, you’ll recall the areas of different shapes and figures such as a square, rectangle, triangle, circle, and parallelogram. This will help you in finding the area of the grass, or a plot, or tiling the floor.
Section 11.3 – In this section, you’ll learn how to find the area of a trapezium. You’ll study that you need some information like the length of the parallel sides and the perpendicular distance between these two parallel sides to find the area of a trapezium.
Section 11.4 – In this section, you’ll learn how to find the area of a general quadrilateral such as a parallelogram, by dividing it into two triangles.
Section 11.5 – In this section, you will acquire knowledge on how to find the area of a polygon. You’ll learn how to apply the technique of ‘triangulation’ and splitting the polygon into two congruent triangles by drawing a diagonal across it.
Section 11.6 – In this section, you’ll observe the solid shapes in detail and also learn what right circular cylinders are.
Section 11.7 – In this section, you’ll learn how to find the total surface area, the area of each face of the solid figures like cube, cuboid and cylinder.
Section 11.8 – In this section, you’ll learn what volume is and try to compare the volume of objects around you. You’ll also learn how to find volumes of cuboid, cube and cylinder.
Section 11.9 – In this section, you’ll study the difference between volume and capacity and learn how to find volume of various solid figures.
In this chapter, you are provided with several diagrams and examples along with their solutions for a clear understanding of Mensuration.
