In this chapter, you’ll study about direct and inverse proportions. Two variables are said to be directly proportionate, if they both change in the same sense, i.e., if the amount of one variable increases, the amount of the other variable also increases or if the amount of one variable decreases, the other also decreases. For instance, the more money you deposit in the bank, the more interest you receive or the more number of hours you work, the more you are paid.
On the other hand, two variables are called inversely proportionate if one of the variables is directly proportionate to the reciprocal of the other (multiplicative inverse). If the amount of one variable increases, the amount of the other variable decreases and vice versa. For instance, as the speed of the car increases, the time taken to reach the destination decrease or the more the number of workers, the lesser time it takes to finish a job.
13.1 Introduction
13.2 Direct Proportion

Section 13.2 – In this section, you’ll learn what direct proportion is and solve problems like finding the length of the cloth, the height of the tree, finding the actual distance covered and more.
Section 13.3 – In this section, you’ll learn what inverse proportion is and solve problems related to finding the time taken to fill in the water tank, time taken to finish a job, area of land per person and more.
