In previous classes, you have learnt about equations in one and two variables. You also learnt how to convert statement problems in the form of equations. In this chapter, you’ll study linear inequalities in one and two variables. What is a linear inequality? Inequalities are a part and parcel when you’re working on algebra problems. A linear inequality is an inequality that consists of a linear function. It represents the data which is not equal in the graph form. A linear inequality is like a linear equation; the only difference is that the equality sign is replaced by the inequality sign.
A good understanding of linear inequalities is important, as linear inequalities have quite a few real-life applications, especially in the field of mathematics, science, psychology, economics and more.
6.1 Introduction
6.2 Inequalities
6.3 Algebraic Solutions of Linear Inequalities in One Variable and their Graphical Representation
6.4 Graphical Solution of Linear Inequalities in Two Variables
6.5 Solution of System of Linear Inequalities in Two Variables
Section 6.2 – In this section, you’ll learn what inequalities are and how are they symbolised. You’ll also study some related terms such as double inequalities, strict inequalities and slack inequalities.
Section 6.3 – In this section, you’ll try to find the algebraic solutions of linear inequalities in one variable and how to show these graphically. You’ll also learn about some important properties of numerical inequalities that will be used in solving inequalities.
Section 6.4 – In this section, you’ll acquire knowledge on how to find the graphical solution of linear inequalities in two variables.
Section 6.5 – In this section, you’ll learn how to represent the method for solving a system of linear inequalities in two variables graphically with the help of a few examples.
In this chapter, you are provided with several examples along with their solutions for a clear understanding of Linear Inequalities.
