Summary:
The story, “A Baker from Goa” by Lucio Rodrigues, revolves around the importance of bakers in Goan villages. Bakers were highly respected among the Goans. This story revolves around the narrator reminiscing about his childhood days in Goa. The story begins with the elders talking about Goa under the rule of the Portuguese. Their rule may have come to an end but their culture has left a mark on Goa. The one thing that the people of Goa still have adapted from the Portuguese is the tradition of making Bread. The author remembers how back in the old days he would wait for the breadmaker come to deliver bread and the maidservant of the house would collect it.
In this story, bread was considered as an essential part of one’s diet, and in the life of a Goan, it was even more important as it was an essential delicacy in all of their festivities and occasions. Sweetened bread or Bol is used in marriage ceremonies. Cakes and ‘bolinhas’ were primarily served to guests during Christmas. The mother of the bride prepares sandwiches on engagement ceremonies. The elders in Goa feel nostalgic about the bakers who lived in the villages back when the Portuguese settlements were present. The bakers were referred to as ‘Padres’ by the Goan people.
The morning routine of a baker begins with the bakers coming to deliver to each house every morning. The narrator and his friends would rush out to meet the baker every morning when the baker would come to deliver the bread loaves. The children would do so without brushing their teeth and washing their mouths.
The Goan bakers wore a unique dress, which hare referred to as the Kabai. It was a long knee-length frock. The bakers often wore shirts and trousers, with the latter of them being longer than a half pant but shorter than a full-sized trouser. The Goan bakers or Padres denote their arrival every morning by making jingling sounds with the thud of their sticks. The bakers used to maintain a record of their sales by making calculations on the walls of their houses with pencils.
As per the narrator, the physique of the Goan bakers was similar to that of a jackfruit. This is because of the bakers having a plump physique gave them that kind of appearance in the narrators’ perspective. The bakers still exist in Goa, which signifies the fact that all of them had not left when the Portuguese shifted.
