Start with learning the digital system fundamentals, realize counters, timers, arithimatic logic, then get into assembly based programming for e.g MIPS based architecture. Then learn about various memory management technique, boot loader, Device driver implementation so that a whole system / product can be constructed (e.g.IoT devices)

Your grades doesn't matter in a company. It is the "Practical Experience" that matters in a company. Things that companies are expecting from an embedded engineers are:

1) Basic knowledge of Digital Electronics

2) Elementary level of Microcontollers(like setting of bits, basic peripherals etc)

3) Good programming skills

4) Average knowledge of Electronic & Semiconductor devices

5) Ability to build basic circuits

6) Debugging Skills
