I teach spoken English using an app, Read My Language. This app has features for 360 degree learning of English, comprising of hearing, reading using transliteration & English, translation of contents (currently Bangla & Hindi), dictionary-enablement as well as allowing the students to practice speaking. The app has contents with different levels of difficulty. The approach adopted is teaching English through stories. Explaining the concepts of the language structure and grammar occurs during the classroom sessions. The students are then asked to read and hear the contents in the app. A discussion of the concepts taught in class then ensues with the students participating verbally in the same. A new concept of grammar, new vocabulary, etc. is introduced to the students in each story. This approach has helped students become more participative in the classes. Also, since they have the app with them 24x7, they can read and practice speaking English even after the regular classes which allow them to be “immersed” in the language. This has helped them to feel less “intimidated” by the language and in the process become proficient in speaking English. The teaching philosophy is based on the following: => allowing students to be “immersed” in the language; => practice in the comfort of one's “personal” space and time; => the more one reads, listens and speaks, the quicker one becomes familiar and comfortable speaking the language.
