"I am fortunate to be a student of Dr. Gupta for quite sometime. I took three courses taught by him and he was also my adviser for the final year project. I always enjoyed his courses and looked forward to attend the nex...t class. Not only did the course covered the subject in depth, it also gave me an application oriented approach. This helped me in improving my problem solving abilities. Thus, given a new problem, I could now formulate it and apply existing techniques to solve it. We could approach him anytime if we were stuck with anything. With respect to my final year project, my problem was well defined from the beginning. Dr. Gupta had clear and concise instructions while explaining the aim of the project. Due to the clear understanding of the problem, I could start early and make significant progress. Dr. Gupta has always been encouraging and motivating at times when I was stuck and was unable to do any substantial progress. I have learnt a lot from him. My inclination towards research developed under his guidance. He truly plays a significant role in shaping my career. We are fortunate to have him here. " more

Algorithms

"I have had the opportunity of taking the Algorithms course by Prof. Prosenjit Gupta in my second year of BTech. Taking that course is an experience worth having. The classes were not just about introducing different alg...orithmic techniques. In addition to the ‘whats’ and ‘hows’, these classes taught us the ‘whys’ too, which I believe went a long way in making us inquisitive learners and inspired us to go deeper into Cormen and try out different problems ourselves. This course, rather than presenting pre-defined solutions to the problems, urged us to think and come up with our own solutions. Prof. Gupta was also my mentor in one of my undergraduate research projects. We would have very regular meetings, which made sure that there was always a steady progress. His insights helped us gain the right perspective whenever we needed it. It was a perfect blend of guidance and freedom/flexibility. This project was my first tryst with research work and I would go on to say that this experience was a major contributing factor in my decision to pursue higher studies in general and research in particular.
