It's a chemical bond in which pairs of electrons are shared between two atoms. Carbon has four electrons in its outer shell that can be shared without completely giving four electrons or completely taking four electrons to complete its octet. As a carbon atom will not handle the increased amount of negative charges or positive charges due to the complete giving or taking of four electrons, this bond is helpful for a carbon atom, which allows it to form multiple covalent bonds also various allotropic forms.
