Before you begin learning JavaScript, you will want to make sure you have a solid foundation in HTML & CSS, and in web development concepts in general. Assuming you do have that background, you would then move onto learning vanilla JavaScript. You want to be able to write well-formed, object-oriented JavaScript and having a solid understanding of the data types, operators, and data structures of the language. Kyle Simpson’s You Don’t Know JS book series is a good resource that is available to read online for free! For a solid documentation reference, I recommend Mozilla's JavaScript documentation.
If you want to get to a professional level quickly, there are online learning and mentorship programs available such as Thinkful, where a professional web developer can help guide you through what you need to know, and provide you a structure for learning. I am a mentor at Thinkful myself. You have 1-on-1 sessions with your mentor each week — students who learn 1-on-1 perform better than 98% of students who learn in traditional classrooms.
Thinkful offers various courses on different technologies, including a Frontend Web Development course and a Node.js course. For a well-rounded program with a job placement guarantee, I would recommend looking at either our Full Stack Flex (part-time) or Engineering Immersion (full-time) courses.
All of Thinkful’s courses offer 1-on-1 mentor sessions. In addition, you can also choose from 30+ hours worth of mentor-hosted Q&A sessions each week, or hop on Slack to get help from mentors and peers. Thinkful’s Bootcamp Jobs Report is updated every month to give you a clear picture of graduation rate, job placement rate, and student salary improvement.
