To be ready to work in this field, one should have a normal understanding of mathematics. Then there is a requirement of a programming language. First of all, learn Python or R. These are the most widely used languages in the Data Science field. You may first learn basics and learn special libraries. You may take an internship for some experience.

If you have decided to get into Data Science? To learn about data starting from Microsoft Certifications like A) DP-900 B) DP-300 and then take up C)DP-200/201 and these will open up a clear path for you to become a data scientist where your journey starts. However, if it is about securing a job? I think the certifications that I mentioned are good enough to get a job with a decent package. Or use your existing knowledge in mechanical and electrical and try to enhance the same areas where you need not re-invent the wheel to begin a new career.

Data Science can be used in many domains like Medical, Pharma, Finance, Automobile, etc. It always revolves around the data we have. It becomes a little tricky in the beginning when you step into data science, as you don't have experience in the IT sector. It becomes a little smooth once you start to get your hands dirty with it. Many languages can be used for data science. Most of the projects are based on python and R programming.
There are roughly three job roles(Data Scientist, Data Engineer, Data Analyst) you can fit into once you complete the data science course. Choose the job role you want to enter into and work towards them. Also, get a good grip on probability and Statistics as they play a crucial role.
So, I suggest you get some intermediate grip on some programme.
