The bonds formed by the sharing of electrons between the atoms of two or more two non-metal elements are covalent.
Since carbon has 4 electrons in its outermost shell (6=2,4), neither can it lose or gain electrons as it is not possible for an atom to lose or gain more than 3 electrons. So carbon with 4 electrons in its outermost shell had its way of completing its octet. It shares electrons with electrons of other atoms or other carbon atoms to form different compounds by forming a covalent bond. Carbon can share four electrons at a time with different atoms. It is how covalency is helpful for carbon.
