So2 is the most serious fas pollutant. On combustion of coal in the factory, so2 is released. Coal contains 0.1 to 6% of sulphur.
S+o2--->so2. So2 is also produced when sulphite ores are roasted in air during extration of metals.
2FeS2 + 5O2 --> 5FeO+ 4So2
2Cu2S + 3O2 --> 6Cu + 3So2
So2 is highly irritating gas to respiratory tract of human beings. Even at low concentration it causes drying if mouth, throat, eye irritation.
