A covalent bond is a chemical bond in which pair of electrons are shared between two atoms. It is also called a molecular bond.

A covalent bond is useful for carbon:

  • The atomic number of carbon is 6. Each atom has 4 electrons in its outer shell called valence electrons and forms a chemical bond with other atoms and molecules.
  • It can donate its 4 electrons, but it requires a large amount of energy to lose all 4 electrons.
  • Also, it can gain 4 electrons from another atom, but it is difficult for the resulting carbon atom to be stable.
  • So it shares valence electrons with those of other carbon atoms or atoms of other elements. Hence form a bond between these atoms. This sharing of atoms instead of gaining and losing is called covalent bonding.

So carbon has the most favourable structure for covalent bonding.
