The sharing of electrons between two atoms is a covalent bond. Carbon has six electrons in it, two in s orbital and 4 in the p orbital. Its outermost shell has 4 electrons. To attain the octet figure, it has to gain more than 4 electrons or lose four electrons. Still, it can't do that, so it shares the electron from another atom or itself.
