I think that dance was one of the ways to integrate individual into their place in tribe. Each member had their role in it. It is not the same to dance as a young hunter or as an old and experienced one.

Along the same lines, I guess it was also used as a part of ceremony rites of passage. Tribes were dancing for important events like birth, death or as a part of initiation into adulthood.

Then also it had deeply religious role. Tribes danced to be in contact with the spirits.
