To form molecules, atoms form different types of bonds. One such bond is a covalent bond with electron(s) characteristics in forming this bond. Carbon has 4 electrons in its outer shell, so it either needs to give away 4 electrons or take 4 electrons to attain stability. And to give or take 4 electrons requires a lot of energy, so carbon ends up sharing its outermost electrons with other atoms to form bonds called covalent bonds.
