A covalent bond is a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms. These electron pairs are known as shared pairs or bonding pairs, and the stable balance of affinity and repulsive forces between atoms when they share electrons is known as covalent bonding. Carbon contains four electrons in its outer shell. Therefore it can form 4 covalent bonds with other atoms or molecules. Since Carbon has 4 electrons in its outer shell, it can form 4 covalent bonds.
