It must have truss rod in fretboard which helps to adjust the action of your guitar. Don't buy a guitar which have straight metal wire at the very start of the fretboard.

The guitar should feel and sound good to you. Also factor in the kind of music you play or see yourself playing. For example if you see yourself performing heavier styles of music then getting humbucker pickups on an electric guitar would be a good choice.

Ask yourself what features you would like for example attached tuner, coil split options, Floyd Rose bridge, pickup on semi-acoustic guitar etc. You will not always find a guitar within your budget that checks everything you want and you may have to make a hard choice.

If a guitar appears damaged in any significant way then avoid it. Watch out for issues like rusted parts, crackling knobs, bent neck etc and if these cannot be properly fixed by the store people then do not waste your time with them. I would suggest buying from a store instead of online as you can check the instrument and try it out before you purchase. However if buying online is the only option you see, then choose a website which is generally well reviewed and has a good return policy.

Only you are in best position to decide. Decide on the basis of strength. The stronger hand should be playing and other hand should be holding frets.
