The essence of music lies in the scales and modes. The whole music originates from there only, there are formulas for scales and chords. After learning them throughout the neck of a guitar, you should jump to modes and their specific chords to get the emotional flavour of each modes. Therefore, I think beginners should always start with scales and basic finger movements rather then putting all there focus on learning a cover song because that's just imitation in the end but it's fun to play and sing along your favourite song.
Just get a good teacher and stick to what he or she tells you to do in the beginning, after few months if you follow that regiment you will flourish ✌️.
read lessdon't play chords on the first day ever, start from tab playing for 2-4 weeks so you will be comfortable with guitar positions and finger running, then you can jump to chord section if you don't wanna play lead more but chords will be easy after that, it's hard to syncronize at first but keep practiicng, take instructions from a live teacher if you don't get results from youtube
read lessFirstly, learn the following chords : Em, G, D, C, Am, A etc. Learn them from youtube or just looking up the chord charts in google. These are the easiest and most basic chords. You will surely have trouble holding them down and strumming at first and your fingers will feel sore but DON’T GIVE UP, i repeat, DON’T GIVE UP. Cause this is the hardest part, you can easily get demotivated here, but remember it gets better i promise.
Now learn how to transition between chords. This is how i did it :
*before doing this make sure you can hold down these chords decently*
Take a chord eg. C chord, strum four down strokes, then transition to D and repeat 4 down strocks and so on. Keep changing the chords to Am, A, C etc. Any pattern you like. But let me tell you this is gonna take some time. This is the time that made me wanna give up. And yes i did give up a few times but i got back to it, because i really wanted to play. I kept going back even if i fingers burned. And I’m a girl, that means naturally our fingers are softer than guys, this made it more challenging. This part is the hardest but i promis you can do it. If i can you can too.
After you are able transition between chords swiftly, start throwing up strums in between. Now, up strums are a little challenging then down strums because at first they don’t sound good , this is because you unconsiously put more pressure in the up strums, one thing you can do is to keep in mind to strum the up strokes with less pressure. And remember you don’t have to sound perfect this instant, you’ll get better as the time goes on.
