First of all, it totally depends on your practice and how much time you dedicate to the instrument and second, if you do so properly, then I can complete basic guitar syllabus in 3 months.

See Sunil, I think it matters the way you are learning music theory. I guess learning theory and songs go hand in hand. You should be able to know the relation between scale and particular song. If you understand it and focus on your skill development then its very easy to have a grip on a guitar!
