It uses three mutually perpendicular planes, as there are two perpendicular walls with a common corner & the room floor or roof. The line of sight which is used to project extreme points on these three planes using normal to the plane. This ensures that the dimensions between the points are unaffected if the distance os viewer of the plane from the plane is varied. The projection on vertical planes is called Elevation, while that on horizontal plane is called Plan. To completely visualize an object three projections are sufficient - viz Front Elevation, Left or Right - hand side elevation & Top Plan. These are called viewed & each view gives two mutually perpendicular dimensions out of three of an object. It is advised to use a book as an object initially, keep it vertically such that its from cover faces the viewer & is parallel to one of the wall of the room. This cover side is seen in Front Elevation, it has height & width of book. The Top Plan will show its width & tthickness, & Left or Right side Elevation will show its height & thickness with opening side or winding side. Note that in a camera view the size of view changes with distance between book & camera, further two parallel sides may not have same size in the view, but in engg. drawing these are not affected. read less
